![]() The NVidia graphics are simply not acceptable (by the powers that be who set BluRay playability standards) for playing 4K HDR BluRay discs. (c) CyberLink Blu-Ray Advisor points out several problems that would prevent the P17 from playing 4K HDR BluRay discs, even if a suitable external USB BluRay drive is connected. Windows does NOT present the "Use HDR" ON/OFF toggle switch in any presentation where it should be shown (and in fact IS shown when the P17 runs in hybrid mode). HDR simply does not function in discrete mode. (b) Furthermore, HDR support that is supposedly available for the 4K laptop screen is simply NOT PRESENT WHEN RUNNING DISCRETE (both for laptop-only as well as when an external HDMI monitor is connected). If an external HDMI monitor is connected at boot time XRite "gets confused" and extracts the wrong Hardware ID (which is used to locate the factory calibration ICM files) and thus complains "ICC files missing" and aborts. (a) In particular, XRite will only start properly if only the laptop screen is present at boot time. (2) But go into discrete graphics, and major things now either malfunction or plain don't work at all. (c) CyberLink Blu-Ray Advisor confirms that (if a suitable external USB BluRay drive is connected) the P17 using Intel HD Graphics could, in fact, play 4K HDR BluRay discs. HDR on the laptop screen works properly in either configuration. And again, this success is seen no matter whether only the laptop screen is present or if there is also an external HDMI monitor connected at boot time. ![]() Windows presents the "Use HDR" switch as expected, and the laptop screen can be toggled between SDR and HDR with no problem (although XRite is only usable in SDR mode, and automatically goes inoperative when the laptop screen is placed into HDR mode). (b) Furthermore, HDR for the laptop screen works perfectly as well. XRite initializes properly and behaves properly in either configuration. Doesn't matter if only the laptop screen is present or if there is also an external HDMI monitor connected at boot time. (a) XRite Color Assistant initializes successfully and works properly (although it is only concerned with the SDR factory calibration ICM files delivered with a P17 that has the 4K screen). (1) There are no problems at all when running hybrid (both with only the laptop screen in use at boot time, as well as when an external HDMI monitor is connected at boot time). There is a distinct difference in behavior if the BIOS is set to discrete graphics vs. I have been fighting with my new P17 for about 3 weeks now, with several major categories of problems.
